Beyonce and Jay Z have been married for seven years, which, considering their hectic schedules and all of the shameful rumors surrounding their relationship, is quite a milestone. Bey recently dropped a new video, filmed by Jay, in which she debuted a song called “Die With You,” written for her hubby. Jay took to Instagram a few days ago to post a 2008 clip of their secret nuptials. As a fan of both Bey and Jay, I love getting glimpses into the behind-the-scenes of the life they share. At the same time, I’m left wondering: What made this extremely private couple suddenly want to go public with their relationship?
Beyonce and Jay Z’s wedding — much like their entire relationship — was kept hush-hush, which made it all the more surprising when Jay posted this video a few days ago of the two on their wedding day.
Hip-hop’s most powerful couple has seen their ups and downs, especially over the past year — the cheating rumors, the divorce rumors, the elevator incident. Through it all, the Beygency and Jaygency have worked their PR magic, keeping the inner workings of Bey and Jay’s relationship sealed to the public. Many think Beyonce and Jay Z’s marriage was more strategic than they let on. I want to believe it was all love.
I do, however, find it out of the ordinary that the couple is now sharing their anniversary celebrations with the public. Seven years together is a long time. Hell, if I was married, I’d want to celebrate every year, too. But seven years is a strange number. It’s not five, 10, 15. It’s, well, seven. I also don’t find it coincidental that Bey and Jay are cherishing this anniversary after facing what seemed like one of the toughest years for their marriage.
I wish all the best to the couple. They’ve become their own empire, and frankly, I’m not sure what music would look like if they weren’t together — that’s just how powerful a couple they are in this industry. But I can’t help but think that their choices to share certain parts of their relationship with the public are calculated. And if that’s the case, wouldn’t the rest of their relationship be just as calculated, too?
